Drainage Systems
It is critical that all paving projects have good drainage. Improper drainage of surface and sub-surface water can significantly decrease the life cycle and structural integrity of your asphalt project. A proper drainage system plays the most important role in determining the ability of a pavement to withstand weather and traffic and in providing you with long-lasting, trouble-free service.
Most subgrade soils consist of materials that weaken when wet. If your subgrade is not properly shaped and sloped for drainage, water may collect on its surface. Water beneath pavement layers will cause the base layer to lose stability and can cause potholes or other road degradation problems.
Water is one of asphalt’s natural enemies. Puddles on your asphalt pavement will slowly break down the asphalt and cause potholes. Water deteriorates asphalt by breaking the bonds that hold the asphalt together. The asphalt binder is a by-product produced from crude oil during gasoline production. Water and oil don’t mix, and this is why it is so important to have a proper drainage plan and occasionally reseal your asphalt to keep water from destroying your pavement.
